PTC Academic Summit
An Exclusive Look at Industry Standard Tools and Best Practices for Academe
June 11 & 12, 2019
Boston Convention & Exhibition Center
415 Summer St., Boston, MA
About the Summit
Preparing the next generation of designers, creators, and innovators for industry begins in the classroom. The need for skilled graduates who can easily integrate into emerging roles is growing everyday as companies strive to remain on the cutting edge.
PTC Academic is proud to function as an intermediary between education and industry. We believe that by equipping colleges and universities with our software solutions, we can help to develop a more hire-ready workforce. PTC tools and resources help students and educators design, manufacture, operate, and service things for an increasingly smart, connected world. At the PTC Global Academic Summit, we will offer an exclusive look at our software as well as best practices for integrating it into your curriculum.
This event is your single greatest opportunity to connect with and learn from world leaders in the product development sphere. You’ll network with fellow instructors, researchers, and technology experts from around the world, learn practical tips from faculty who are using PTC tools, and experience the latest industry innovations.
The Global Academic Summit will be held concurrently with LiveWorx. In addition to participation in the Summit, your all-access pass will grant you access to the full conference where you can experience the most innovative and disruptive technologies – IioT, AR/MR/VR, machine learning, blockchain, robotics and more.

Academic Summit Kickoff
12:15 PM - 1:15 PM
Using IoT & AR to Augment Mechanical Engineering
Chris Rogers, PhD. Professor and Chair, Mechanical Engineering, Tufts University
Chris has used ThingWorx and Vuforia Studio in his college classes and in his studies with middle school students on how people learn. At the college level, his students used ThingWorx and Vuforia Studio to build the “Marauder’s Map” from the Harry Potter series – an interactive map that allowed students to track IoT data on what was being served in the cafeteria, updates on sporting events, and individual’s real-time locations. At the middle school level, he and his students experimented with using AR as a “just-in-time” help device, helping students debug their code by seeing what the robot was “thinking” when they looked at it through their tablet’s camera. Chris will show examples of the students’ work and discuss some of the successes and difficulties of bringing IoT into the classroom.
1:15 PM - 2:00 PM
Teaching CAD and Advanced Manufacturing Courses with PTC Technology
Peter Zink, PhD. Professor Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Boston University
In this presentation Dr. Zink will discuss the use of Creo in his computer-aided design and machine elements course and share his approach to teaching computer-aided design at the undergraduate level. Dr. Zink will also discuss his work in the EPIC (Engineering Product Innovation Center) where he teaches advanced manufacturing courses and has begun a project to integrate augmented reality into the curriculum.
2:15 PM - 3:00 PM
Using AR to Build a Digital Twin Robotics Laboratory
Horst Orsolits, MSc. Deputy Program Director, Bachelor Mechatronics and Robotics, FH Technikum Wien, University of Applied Sciences
Undergraduate and graduate students at the University Technikum Wien are building a digital twin of their robotics laboratory under the direction of Horst Orsolits. Using these models and the associated data, students are able to simulate what is happening on the factory floor. In this session, Horst will present the methods and uses of these digital twins in his coursework and research.
4:00 PM - 4:45 PM
The Integral Connection Between Industry and Academe
In this session, PTC commercial customers will partner with PTC Academic leadership to discuss the importance of qualified graduates. After a brief overview of the programs available to prepare students for the digital transformation taking place, industry representatives will discuss the impact of new graduates and the most in-demand skills in their respective fields. This session highlights the ever-important relationship between academe and industry and gives attendees the opportunity to better understand how to prepare their students for the professional world.
